The Tern GSD S10 is a compact long-tail electric cargo bike built to do the work of a second car. Its 20in wheels keep the wheelbase short enough to park in a hallway or lift, while the patented MultiTruss aluminium frame is rated to a 200kg gross vehicle weight, so it happily carries two children, the weekly shop, or a bulky work load on the 100kg-rated rear rack.

Power comes from Bosch’s flagship Cargo Line motor, delivering 85Nm of torque and up to 400% assistance to get you moving on hills from a standing start. Because assistance cuts out at 25km/h (15.5mph), the GSD S10 is a pedal-assist EAPC and is fully road-legal in the UK with no licence, tax or insurance required. The Bosch battery is dual-battery compatible for serious all-day range, and stopping is handled by Magura MT5 four-piston hydraulic discs.

  • Short 20in wheelbase fits through doors and stands upright for storage
  • 200kg total payload with a 100kg rear-rack rating
  • Bosch Cargo Line motor with 85Nm torque and Purion display
  • Magura MT5 four-piston hydraulic disc brakes for loaded stopping
  • Shimano Deore 1×10 drivetrain and puncture-resistant Schwalbe tyres
  • UK road-legal pedal-assist EAPC, no licence needed

A Closer Look at the Tern GSD S10

The GSD’s party trick is fitting a full-size cargo bike’s carrying capacity into a footprint that behaves like a normal bicycle: the 20in wheels and MultiTruss aluminium frame keep the wheelbase short enough to wheel through a doorway or fit in a lift, while still carrying a 200kg gross vehicle weight — bike, rider and load combined. The Bosch Cargo Line motor’s 85Nm of torque and up to 400% support are tuned specifically for loaded starts, so pulling away from a junction with a full cargo load doesn’t feel like a different bike to riding it empty.

Magura MT5 four-piston hydraulic brakes are sized for that loaded weight rather than borrowed from a standard commuter bike, and dual-battery compatibility means genuinely long trips — up to roughly 195km (121 miles) — are possible without a mid-route charge, which matters if the GSD is replacing a car for longer errands, not just the school run.

Who Rides the GSD S10, and Where

The GSD is built for families and individuals using a cargo bike to replace a second car — the school run, the weekly shop, or a work commute with kit. Its short wheelbase and ability to stand upright on its tail make it a realistic option for flats and terraced housing without garage or shed storage. Because assistance cuts out at 25km/h (15.5mph), it’s a fully UK road-legal EAPC, needing no licence, tax or insurance to ride.

Setup & Care

The Shimano Deore 1×10 drivetrain needs the same routine chain lubrication and cassette wear checks as any derailleur-equipped bike. If running dual batteries, charge and store both per Bosch’s guidance in the manual below, and check tyre pressures more frequently than on a standard bike given the higher gross weight rating. Tern’s fold-and-stand mechanism is designed for repeated daily use — refer to the manual for the correct folding sequence to avoid unnecessary wear on the hinge.

Tern GSD S10: Frequently Asked Questions

How much can the GSD S10 carry, and is it safe for two children?

The frame and rack are rated to a 200kg gross vehicle weight (100kg on the rear rack). The platform is widely used by UK families for school-run duty with compatible child seating — check Tern’s accessory range for options suited to your children’s ages.

Is it road legal, and do I need a licence?

Yes — assistance cuts out at 25km/h (15.5mph) with no throttle, making it a fully UK road-legal EAPC. No licence, tax or insurance is required, though third-party cover is sensible given the bike’s value.

How do I pay, and is finance available?

We currently accept payment by bank transfer. Card payments are coming soon — finance is planned but not yet live; see our Finance page.

What’s your returns policy?

14-day hassle-free returns on unused bikes in original packaging; faulty bikes receive a free collection. Full terms on our Delivery & Returns page.

How far can I ride between charges?

Up to approximately 195km (121 miles) running dual batteries; range with a single battery is lower and depends on load and assist level.
