Once you have a Sur-Ron Light Bee X, the next question is what else you need to ride it safely, secure it properly, and keep it running. After selling hundreds of these bikes in the UK, we have a clear view of which accessories are genuinely worth buying and which are nice-to-haves. This is our practical guide.
Priority 1: Safety Gear (Not Optional)
Full-Face Motocross Helmet
The Sur-Ron Light Bee X reaches 45 mph. A cycling helmet is not designed for these speeds — motocross helmets are. You need a full-face MX helmet meeting ECE 22.06 (the current UK standard, mandatory for new helmets since November 2023). Budget: £80-200 for a solid entry-level helmet. Brands: Fox Racing, O’Neal, Fly Racing, Shoei (for premium options). Do not go below £60 — at that price, the safety rating is questionable. A helmet with MIPS technology provides better rotational impact protection.
Goggles
Motocross goggles are a separate purchase from the helmet — they are not integrated on MX helmets as they are on enduro/MTB full-faces. 100% Accuri 2, Oakley O-Frame 2.0 Pro MX, and Fox Main are popular in the UK Sur-Ron community. Roll-off systems (Scott Prospect) are worth considering if you ride in wet UK conditions.
Body Protection
Knee guards and a chest protector are strongly recommended for anything beyond gentle private land use. Leatt knee guards, Fox Titan chest protectors, and similar are widely available in the UK. For beginners: at minimum wear knee guards. For track or aggressive trail use: add chest protector and elbow guards.
Priority 2: Security
A Sur-Ron Light Bee X is worth £3,000-5,000. It is also lightweight enough to be lifted into a van in seconds. Secure it properly.
Disc Lock
A quality disc lock (Abus 37/80 series, Oxford Boss, Xena XZZ6L) prevents the wheel from rotating. Essential for any time the bike is parked away from your sight. £25-75 depending on quality. Choose a lock with a reminder cable so you do not forget it is on and ride away (this ends badly).
Chain Lock
For overnight storage away from home, or events where you leave the bike for extended periods: a rated chain through the frame and a fixed object. Sold Secure Gold-rated chains: Pragmatis Protector, Squire Chain, Almax Series III. Avoid the very cheap chains — a 4mm chain cuts in under 10 seconds with bolt cutters.
Ground Anchor
If you store the Sur-Ron in a garage or outbuilding, a cemented-in floor anchor (Abus WBA100, Oxford Boxer) with a rated chain through it is the most secure option available. Professional thieves carry angle grinders, not just bolt cutters — the time required to cut through a quality chain on an anchor is the deterrent.
Priority 3: Practical Riding Accessories
Spare Chain and Tool Kit
Sur-Ron chains (428 pitch) wear faster than road bike chains on heavy trail use. Carrying a spare master link and chain tool means you can fix a snapped chain on the trail and ride home rather than waiting for recovery. A basic trail-side toolkit: chain tool, master link, tyre levers, puncture patch kit, 4mm and 5mm Allen keys.
Action Camera Mount
Sur-Ron riding produces excellent footage. GoPro and DJI Action cameras are popular choices. For Sur-Ron mounting: bar mounts (direct handlebar clamp), helmet vented mounts, and chest harnesses all work well. The Sur-Ron’s relatively low vibration compared to petrol bikes means helmet-mounted footage is smoother than you might expect.
Tyre Levers and Portable Pump
Sur-Ron tyres are 19-inch (rear) and 17-inch (front) on the Light Bee X — different from standard bicycle tyres. You need tyre levers rated for heavier tyres and a pump capable of reaching the higher pressures (14-18 PSI typical). A 12V mini compressor (the type that plugs into a cigarette lighter or USB) is useful if you have vehicle support.
Upgrades Worth Considering
Aftermarket Footpegs
The stock Sur-Ron footpegs are adequate but aftermarket options (Talon, Kite, factory-replica wide pegs) provide wider, more aggressive grip platforms. This improves feel and control, especially in wet conditions — a notable factor for UK riders. Cost: £40-100 depending on spec.
Handlebar Grips
ODI and Renthal lock-on grips are popular upgrades. The stock grips are adequate but softer compound grips provide better vibration damping on rough terrain. Lock-on grips (held by clamp bolts rather than just adhesive) do not rotate under load, which matters in rough conditions. Cost: £20-50.
Brake Pads
The stock brake pads are sintered metal — they work well but wear faster in wet UK conditions than in dry. Carrying a spare set is sensible for regular riders. Replace when the pad material is below 2mm — brake fade on a Sur-Ron travelling at 40 mph is a serious safety issue. The Sur-Ron Light Bee X uses standard motocross disc brake pads in a common sizing — replacements are widely available from UK suppliers.
