The definitive UK electric bike legal reference for 2026. Last reviewed: June 2026.

Road-Legal Electric Bikes (EAPC)

An electric bike is road-legal in the UK as an EAPC if it meets ALL of the following: motor is 250W continuous maximum; assistance cuts out at 15.5 mph; rider must be 14 or older; any throttle limited to 6 km/h walk-assist only.

Off-Road Electric Bikes – Sur-Ron, Talaria, and Similar

Sur-Ron, Talaria, Stark Varg, and similar off-road electric bikes exceed EAPC limits and are not road-legal in standard UK configuration. They may only be ridden on private land with the landowners permission. Riding on public roads without registration, insurance, and a valid licence is illegal.
